In 2016, I was awarded the Educational Developer Leadership Award, and in 2018, organized the national EDC conference at the University of Victoria.
My area of research concentrates on academics’ inaugural years of teaching in higher education. My PhD research investigated graduate students’ learning process as they began to teach in the academic workplace. Currently, I am undertaking a multi-year study looking at the impact of a faculty program about learning-centred teaching. In my role as Director of Teaching Excellence, I teach SoTL to graduate students in a credited two-year program (Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Graduate Certificate), to faculty in our Faculty Institute of Teaching (three-term program), and oversee our institutional SoTL grants, which includes ongoing consultations with faculty across all disciplines to help them develop their research, coordinating a community of practice for SoTL researchers, and planning collaborative events (such as our campus wide Let’s Talk about Teaching event). Further, I work with departments to support the curriculum development process. Through these mechanisms, I promote the theory and practice of SoTL to improve student learning. I am committed and passionate about this topic, hence my deep interest in being appointed to the SoTL Canada executive.
Charlene VanLeeuwen
Communications Officer

Charlene is Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre at the University of Prince Edward Island. Supporting faculty with their SoTL projects is a particularly fulfilling aspect of her current role with the centre. She became interested in SoTL as a sessional instructor and this developed into a long-term research interest, along with projects related to digital learning, faculty development, community-based learning, and international development work in rural Kenya. Charlene is also a program director with Shad Canada, a STEAM and entrepreneurship summer program for high school students. Her latest volunteer activity was joining the board of a local organization that works with farming communities in Kenya, where most of the farmers are women.
