STLHE Extends Its Reach On Higher Education Issues

We are very excited to officially announce the creation of Teaching and Learning Canada/ Apprentissage Médiation Enseignement Canada (TLC/AME)*, a charitable arm of the Society where your donation is tax-deductible.

We are also delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Knapper, STLHE founding President, as the inaugural Chair of the TLC/AME Advisory Committee. Chris will be identifying members of the Advisory Board who will support the work of TLC/AME and will outline how some of the near-term outcomes might be achieved at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal on June 21, 2012.

3M National Teaching Fellows thank teachers in new campaign: The 2011 3M National Teaching Fellows have launched a campaign to thank the teachers who inspired them in their careers. The advertising campaign began over the weekend with ads in the Globe and Mail, and the ads will also be published in University Affairs. “Our goal is to draw attention to the importance of undergraduate teaching and the impact that it can have on students, both individually and collectively,” says the University of Guelph’s provost, who has led the campaign. Other students and teachers can post their own messages to inspirational college and university teachers at thankyourteacher.ca. HEQCO report offers recommendations on use of teaching-stream faculty at universities

Exploring the use of teaching-stream faculty (TSF), a new report commissioned by the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario finds the perceived benefits to this approach to be a dedicated focus on teaching and the needs of students, as well as the secure employment of professors wanting to commit to teaching.

Perceived disadvantages include a two-tier stigma within the university because of the high value put on research, the need for faculty to conduct scholarly work to ensure the quality of the student experience, and striking the appropriate balance among teaching, research, and service. Among the report’s recommendations to universities on expanding the use of TSF positions are being sensitive to individual contexts when introducing such a role, value the work and role of TSF, and clarifying expectations for TSF research.
