The College Sector Educators Community (CSEC)

Rationale

While the goals and strategic directions of STLHE are as applicable to educators in the Canadian college sector as they are to university educators, there are issues and factors specific to the college context that may merit specific collegial support, resource sharing, and targeted publications/presentations. The college sector in Canada has undergone significant change since its inception, and now delivers programming designed to meet the needs of students seeking life-long learning, skills remediation, vocational training, university transfer preparation, liberal arts instruction, four-year degrees, and personal growth. This evolution has presented challenges and opportunities for college educators, and now prompts a greater degree of attention to issues related to teaching, learning, professional development, and scholarship. 

Mission and Goals

The purpose of the College Sector Educators' Community is to bring together individuals and groups associated with teaching and learning in Canadian colleges, institutes, cégep, polytechnics, and university colleges.  The specific titles of these institutions vary from province to province/territory, but all share a commitment to applied learning, community responsiveness, and learner readiness (whether for the workforce, lifetime fulfillment, or further educational experiences).  The formal association will enable us to share ideas, resources, professional development, and publications or presentations with the aim of supporting and enriching teaching, learning, and scholarship among all participants in this sector of post-secondary education.

 Specifically, this SIG aims to

  • Pursue the aims of STLHE with particular attention to their application to college, institute, cégep, polytechnic, and university college contexts;
  • Provide a forum for the sharing of ideas, resources, and networking among Canadian college sector educators;
  • Provide leadership in the continuing development of a professional identity for college, institute, cégep, polytechnic, and university college teachers in Canada;
  • Create a national forum wherein emerging college teaching issues can be constructively discussed;
  • Provide professional development opportunities for experienced, new, and potential college sector educators at all career stages;
  • Advocate, through STLHE, for college, institute, cégep, polytechnic,and university college teaching issues at a national level.

  

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee as a whole will be responsible for the direction and vision of the SIG, and will determine the objectives and activities thereof.  As well, its members will review submissions for the website and other publications.

Chair                              acts as a representative of the SIG; presides over meetings

Vice Chair                       supports and assists the Chair; responsible for outreach and communication to members via the SIG website, listserv, and other publications

Secretary/Treasurer         responsible for minutes, reports to STLHE, budget and treasury management

Secrétaire Français          responsible for transmitting major communications in French to French-speaking members; for recruiting Francophone members, and for outreach to the Francophone community

Ex-officio

(5) Regional Members      act as liaisons between the executive and the members; represent five major geographic areas (East, Quebec, Ontario, North/Prairies, and West)

Membership                    membership is open to any person or group interested in Canadian colleges and the services they provide; invitation is specifically extended to educators at Canadian colleges (and equivalents)

To be created by a working group of founding members; will include the following:
