Congratulations and welcome to each and every member of the 2007 cohort whom you may have already met through Maclean's Magazine!  They are:

By now you will have seen the recent Maclean's coverage of university teaching and the 3M National Teaching Fellowships. Please send your comments on Maclean's treatment of the award to any member of the Executive Team.

We hope to see you at the 2007 STLHE Conference which will be held June 13-16 at the University of Alberta.

Council of 3M National Teaching Fellows—Assembly

Once again we will privilege dialogue rather than business! After a brief welcome, attendees will be invited to participate in one of the following workshops:

  • Narratives with Guy Allen and Mark Weisberg
  • Exploring Silence (the theme of our next book) with Clarissa Green

Meet and Greet
Friday, June 15, 9:00 to 11:00 am

The new 2007 Fellows will have a first group conversation with their facilitators for the 3M Retreat at Le Chateau Montebello in November—Shannon Murray and Arshad Ahmad.

arrow Optional Membership Fees—Council of 3M National Teaching Fellows

We have enacted an option, first discussed at our 2005 Assembly, of contributing the equivalent of STLHE fees, from which we are normally exempt, to support the work of the Council. Although 3M Canada has offered generous support for "Silence in Teaching and Learning", they are no longer funding operational costs such as travel, conference calls and other office costs.

When you register for the Conference, you will have the option of paying voluntary fees. If you are unable to attend the Conference, you can still make a contribution by completing the online membership form.

Our second book project has elicited a great deal of interest, and we hope you are finding some time to work on an article! More information, including the Call for Submissions, is available on the Council's website.

arrow Permacharts

This pilot project involves publication, in the "Award-Winning Professor Series" of information packages for use by students. After evaluating the experience of writing the five Permacharts currently in progress we will decide, in consultation with STLHE, whether to expand the project.

Fourth Multi-National Forum of Teacher-Scholars

Gary Poole is coordinating Canadian participation in the Fourth Multi-National Forum of Teacher Scholars, which will be held in Sydney, Australia in July, in conjunction with the 2007 ISSOTL Conference. Thanks to Gary, and also to the other colleagues who are maintaining the momentum behind this important scholarly initiative.

Initiatives and Reports from previous Forums are available on the Council's website.

Although a team of Fellows began work to revive the Society's electronic journal, Positive Pedagogy, the Executive Team wishes to wait while discussion of a similar project is directed by those responsible for the Society's Scholarship of Teaching and Learning portfolio.

arrow 3M Speakers Bureau

We are in the process of organizing a 3M National Teaching Fellows Speakers Bureau which will, with the permission of the presenters, provide special designatation for workshops and other events. We hope that the Speakers' Bureau will also be a modest source of revenue.
