Guidelines for Authors

The STLHE Green Guides are inspired by a similar publication series initiated in 1984 by our sister organisation in Australia, HERDSA (the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia). The guides are intended to be relatively short, easy to read handbooks on different aspects of higher education, with a particular focus on teaching and learning issues. Green Guides appeal to faculty across disciplines and offer pragmatic advice on a wide variety of the tasks and responsibilities of university teachers, with the aim of encouraging reflection on current practice and enhanced effectiveness.

Submitting a Proposal

An academic who is interested in writing a Green Guide should first submit to the Series Editors a summary of the proposed manuscript of up to four pages in length. The summary should include:

A proposed title and short (half-page) summary of the aims and scope of the guide;
The main issues to be dealt with in the guide, if possible in the form of a list of topics or sections, with a brief description of each topic;
The main audience for the guide and why it should be of use to them;
A brief statement of the author's background with special reference to the focus of the guide;
An indication of the manuscript's length, bearing in mind that each Green Guides contains approximately 20,000 words or is 60 pages in length.
Any other information which will help the Series Editors reach a decision about the suitability of the guide for publication.

The proposal will first be read by the two Series Editors (currently Christopher Knapper and Alan Wright), who may also seek the advice of the STLHE Publications Committee.  When a proposal seems suitable for publication as a Green Guide the Series Editors will provide the author with comments, including  suggestions for possible changes in content or emphasis, and at this stage the author will be encouraged to prepare a full manuscript, and provided with more detailed guidelines about the format to be followed, including layout, headings, font, methods for citing references, etc.  Final manuscripts need to be prepared in electronic format.

Reviewing the Manuscript

When a completed manuscript for a Green Guide has been received, the Series Editor will forward it to at least two independent reviewers for their comments on its suitability for publication and make suggestions for possible changes.  The reviews will be considered by the Series Editors, who will make the final decision about publication.

Copyright and Royalties

Once a manuscript is accepted for publication as a Green Guide all arrangements for printing, binding, and final editing will be made by STLHE.  Copyright will be held jointly by STLHE and the author, and STLHE will arrange for sale and distribution.  Authors will receive 10 free copies of the guide, but no royalties are payable.
